Vegas has a reputation problem for non-gamblers. The assumption is that without the casino floor, thereโs no reason to be there. That assumption is wrong, and I say this as someone who has never put a dollar in a slot machine.
A week in Las Vegas, approached correctly, is genuinely excellent travel.
The Food Situation Is Better Than It Has Any Right to Be
Las Vegas has, against all logic, become one of Americaโs great food cities. The economics work differently here โ celebrity chefs pay enormous licensing fees to have their names on Strip restaurants, and the competition has pushed quality across the board.
Spago at the Bellagio โ Wolfgang Puckโs flagship runs $80-120/person for dinner but the lunch prix fixe is around $40 and covers the same kitchen. Worth timing your visit for.
Lotus of Siam on East Sahara Avenue โ legitimately the best Thai food in the United States, according to everyone whoโs paid attention. Itโs off-Strip in a strip mall and costs a fraction of a comparable Strip meal. Northern Thai specials are what to order. Make a reservation.
Eggslut at the Cosmopolitan โ chaotic breakfast counter doing eggs in ways that justify the name. The Slut (coddled egg over potato purรฉe in a glass jar) is strange and perfect.
For cheap and good: the casino food halls and off-Strip options in the neighborhood around Fremont Street. Meals for $8-12 that are better than they have any right to be โ the city needs to feed workers cheaply.
The Shows Are Legitimately Great
Las Vegas remains the best place in the world to see certain types of live entertainment. Weโve seen three Cirque du Soleil shows here (they run multiple simultaneously), a major comedy act at the Wynn, and a residency concert that would have cost four times as much in any other market.
Mystรจre at Treasure Island โ one of the older Cirque shows but still technically impressive. Tickets from $70. Go.
The Sphere โ still relatively new and genuinely unlike anything else. The immersive concert and show experiences here redefine what a venue can do. Premium pricing ($100-200+) but the technology justifies it.
Booking shows 2-3 weeks out usually gets better prices than walk-up. Vegas is full of last-minute deal finders too โ half-price show tickets day-of at the Tix4Tonight booths on the Strip.
Day Trips From Vegas Are World-Class
This is the real secret. Las Vegas sits within day-trip distance of some of the American Southwestโs best scenery.
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area โ 17 miles west of the Strip. Stunning red sandstone formations, excellent hiking, and almost no one once you get off the main scenic drive. Day pass is $15/car. We hiked the Calico Hills and spent four hours there. Coming from the neon of the Strip to those formations in 25 minutes is one of the stranger location contrasts you can engineer.
Hoover Dam โ 30 miles southeast. The engineering is genuinely impressive even if youโve seen photos. The powerplant tour goes inside the dam. Plan 2-3 hours, go on a weekday morning for smaller crowds.
Valley of Fire State Park โ 50 miles northeast. Red sandstone formations, ancient petroglyphs, campgrounds, and almost no tourists compared to its quality level. We did a full day and it was one of the trip highlights.
Zion National Park โ 2.5 hours. Doable as a very long day trip, better as an overnight. See the separate Utah coverage.
Practical Realities
Room rates: Vegas hotel prices are algorithmically volatile. A Sunday night that costs $60 can cost $400 on a Thursday before a major event. Book as far out as possible, check rates repeatedly, and be flexible on nights if you can.
Heat: Summer in Las Vegas is 105ยฐF+ and genuinely dangerous. Outdoor activities happen before 10am or after 5pm. The rest of the time, youโre inside air conditioning.
Walking the Strip: Itโs farther than it looks. The Strip is 4.2 miles long and the hotels are enormous. Factor in more walking time than you think, or use the Deuce bus ($8 for 24 hours) or the monorail.
Vegas without gambling gave us a week of genuinely diverse experiences. Weโll be back.
Fly into Harry Reid International (LAS) โ one of the best-connected airports in the West. Resort fees are mandatory and often not included in booking prices โ check the fine print.
